Most jobs that are in demand in Canada are given a points scale as per the General Occupations List. Your present occupation requires at least ONE point for immigration purposes.
Education is very important. Where a person has not completed a High School Diploma, he/she will receive ZERO points. High School graduation is worth 5 points, but if it leads to university entrance - 10 points. College or Trade School that requires at least 12 months full-time study - 13 points, a degree - 15 points and a Masters/Ph.D - 16 points.
Job training and experience are also very important when evaluating an application. Similar to education, the more experience and occupational skill you have, the more points you get, up to the maximum allowed.
Knowledge of English and/or French is also very significant. Canada is placing increased importance on one's ability to communicate in English. Consequently you may be asked to read or write some English during your interview to show your proficiency in the language.
You may be awarded up to 10 points for personal suitability. This is based on the officer's assessment of your ability to adapt and integrate yourself into Canadian society. You will need to show enthusiasm, motivation and a desire to succeed.
If you have a conditional offer of employment approved by the National Employment Service, you will be awarded 10 points.
Bonus points - 5. If you fall under the category of an assisted relative, that is, a family member who is a permanent resident of Canada and your relationship to that person is:
